St Saud and surroundings

You can find Wakan Tanka centrally between 3 big cities; Limoges, Periguex and Angouleme. All three about an hour’s drive away. The campsite itself is sited in the middle of woodlands and farmlands, an ideal place for people to enjoy walks and nature. Wild orchids, hop, and the fire lizard are a few examples of wildlife and plants to be found.

Besides the activities on the campsite, there is plenty to do for everyone in the surrounding area. To give you a few ideas:

Swimplaces

At about 1 kilometre distance is the Grand Etang, a beautiful swim lake with to name a few a sandy beach, grassland and play area. A little bit further away from the campsite there are several beautiful lakes to visit. If the weather is not so nice there are also some indoor swimming pools around.

Many people ask if we’re planning to have a swimming pool on the campsite. Each year we ask our guests if this is something they would like. The answer is mostly that they don’t. Besides safety, it makes the campsite quieter, and with a swim lake this close, this is not something we are planning in the foreseeable future.

Click here for a collage of pictures of the swim lake.

On advice of our guests we would like to highlight this a little as people use it a lot and happily. Besides the lifeguard, toilets and showers, bar, grassland, play area etc. this is also an important meeting place for the children of the campsite. Despite the fact that lakes in the surrounding area are just as nice, “our” lake is a firm favourite.

Treetop climbing

An activity for you and your children where you can be active in and around trees. Through rope bridges, zip line, nets and lots more constructions, you can climb from tree to tree. You can visit this activity individually, or once a week with a group organised by the campsite. This last option is mostly used as friendships made whilst climbing can then be continued at the campsite during the weekly BBQ or a glass of wine at your tent.

Canoeing

The canoeing is done in Brantome on the Dronne, a beautiful town which has been called the Venice of Perigord. There is a choice of hourly trips, renting one for an afternoon, or even a whole day. Afterwards it is really worthwhile to wander through the town, and a visit to the diverse shops hewn out from the rock is a must.

Castles

There are also several castles to be found in the surrounding area. Most of these castles are on the route of Richard the Lion heart, a crusader of the 12th century. Richard the Lion heart was King of England and Duke of part of south-west France. Richard the Lion heart died during a skirmish in 1199 close to Chalus.

Caves of Villars

Several caves have been discovered in the Perigord region. The caves closest to the campsite are the caves of Villars. Here you can view pre-historic drawings, but also limestone formations, in which the lighting ensures an extra nice effect. Making a visit well worth it.

Zoo

Close to Limoges lies a big, beautiful set up zoo, where over 550 animals of different kinds live. The park is grand and is fun for both young and old. At the entrance you can buy special popcorn with which to feed a variety of animals.

Oradour sur Glane

A less happy sight, but none the less worth a visit is the village Oradour sur Glane. This is where, in the Second World War, a bloodbath was, which killed the whole village. The village hasn’t been rebuild, but is kept in the exact state the Germans left it in, and is now used as a memorial.

Markets

Besides all these activities in the area, we also can’t forget the big weekly markets in Piegut and Thiviers. Stalls overflowing with local produce like truffles, chestnut liqueur, nut-oil, French cheeses and of course fresh fruit and vegetables, make sure that most leave with some of these tasteful souvenirs.

Museums

In the surrounding area of the campsite there are also several museums to be viewed.
